- Who are you?
We are all members of Queens'. We hope to be fairly representative of the college: this year there eleven undergraduates from all four years, one graduate and three Fellows. Some of us, including the president, were on the 1999 ball committee.
All the responsibilities which the committee has are divided up into what we call "departments", although most of these consist of only one person. Food and Entertainment both consist of two people.
- How did you get to be on the committee, and what do you get out of it?
The President of Queens' May Ball is traditionally nominated by the previous committee. The Senior Treasurer is appointed by the Governing Body of the college. Everyone else was appointed by a panel consisting of the President, the Senior Treasurer, the previous first year students (who usually serve a second term) and the two other Fellows. We advertise and hold interviews for each position. The competition is usually quite fierce.
We don't get paid for being on the committee - we attend the Ball, but we have to work once we're there. Hopefully, we enjoy ourselves along the way, and, of course, it looks good on your CV. Having all of your friends pat you on the back afterwards and tell you how much they enjoyed themselves is also an extremely rewarding experience!
Recruitment for the committee of the Queens' May Ball 2003 will start in January 2002 -- look out for advertisements for committee posts then!
